Healthy Food For A Week: Day 3 Results

Nothing like launching a reality blog series two weeks prior to our business launch to either boost or completely damage our credibility.  Quite gutsy, but I must admit our family is slowly turning the corner.  This could be their start to a more healthy lifestyle.

Last night was Grilled Cheese and Broccoli.  Grilled Cheese is an easy win with her family.  Instead of the typical french fry pairing, we  experimented with steamed broccoli.  We are using low fat cheese, but sticking with white bread for now.  We don't want to send their bodies into shock.  We have plenty of time to introduce healthier breads down the road.

So how did it go?  Slam Dunk!  Touchdown!  Grand Slam!  It was an easy win for the family.  To mom's surprise, her oldest actually enjoyed the broccoli.  Keep in mind, this was their first time buying real broccoli so we couldn't be more thrilled. Little Jake wouldn't attempt broccoli this time, but we're not giving up on him.  He'll eventually come around...once I figure out how to make broccoli look like a donut!

The biggest success story so far is that the family has been 3 days without fast food.  They typically eat out 3-4 times a week.  This is HUGE!

Tomorrow is spaghetti and then we conclude the week with homemade chicken nuggets.  Stay tuned!  Still lots of action around the corner- especially with the nuggets.  I'm determined to get little Jake on board.

Dietitian's Tip:  Broccoli can be a tough sell for little kids.  A good approach is to talk with your kids about the health benefits of vegetables.  Broccoli contains high amounts of potassium which improve brain function and promote muscle growth.  Kids, especially little boys, love the idea of eating something that makes their body big and strong.
